Turn Keto Sandwich Bread Into a Crispy, Creamy and Satisfying Everyday Meal
There is something especially comforting about a warm tuna melt. Creamy tuna salad, toasted bread, and melted cheese come together in a simple meal that feels indulgent without requiring a lot of preparation.
And yes, you can enjoy a delicious tuna melt while following a keto lifestyle.
The secret is starting with a sturdy, low-carb sandwich bread that can hold the tuna mixture without becoming soggy. Homemade Keto Sandwich Bread is especially good for this because it can be toasted before adding the toppings.
These Keto Tuna Melts make a quick lunch, light dinner, or satisfying weekend meal.
Why Tuna Melts Work So Well for Keto
Tuna is naturally very low in carbohydrates and provides plenty of protein. Mayonnaise adds richness and fat, while cheese turns the top golden, warm, and delicious.
The ingredient that normally makes a tuna melt high in carbohydrates is the bread.
Replace traditional sandwich bread with keto sandwich bread and you can enjoy the familiar flavors of a classic tuna melt while keeping the carbohydrate count much lower.
Keto Tuna Melts
Makes 2 servings
Ingredients
4 slices Keto Sandwich Bread
1 5-ounce can tuna in water, well drained
3 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 tablespoons finely chopped celery
1 tablespoon finely chopped dill pickle
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
Black pepper to taste
4 slices cheddar, Swiss, provolone, or Monterey Jack cheese
Optional additions:
Finely chopped green onion
A thin tomato slice
Chopped fresh parsley
A sprinkle of paprika
A small amount of chopped fresh dill
Directions
Preheat the oven to 400°F.
Place the keto bread slices on a baking sheet.
Toast the bread in the oven for approximately 4 to 5 minutes. Turn the slices over and toast the other side for another 2 to 3 minutes.
You want the bread lightly toasted rather than completely crisp. Toasting creates a barrier between the bread and moist tuna filling and helps prevent a soggy tuna melt.
While the bread is toasting, prepare the tuna mixture.
Place the well-drained tuna in a small bowl. Add the mayonnaise, celery, dill pickle, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper.
Stir until everything is thoroughly combined.
Divide the tuna mixture evenly among the four pieces of toasted keto bread.
Top each with one slice of cheese.
Return the tuna melts to the oven and bake for approximately 5 minutes or until the tuna is heated through and the cheese has melted.
For a slightly browned cheese topping, place the tuna melts briefly under the broiler. Watch them carefully because cheese can brown very quickly.
Serve immediately while the cheese is hot and melted.
Why Toast the Keto Bread First?
This small step can make a big difference.
Tuna salad contains moisture from both the tuna and mayonnaise. Putting the mixture directly onto soft bread can cause the bread to absorb some of that moisture.
Lightly toasting the keto bread first helps it remain sturdy underneath the filling.
You get three different textures in every bite: toasted bread on the bottom, creamy tuna in the middle, and melted cheese on top.
Choosing the Cheese
Cheddar is a classic choice because its stronger flavor pairs beautifully with tuna.
Swiss gives the tuna melt a milder, slightly nutty flavor.
Provolone melts exceptionally well and has a smooth flavor that does not overpower the tuna.
Monterey Jack is another excellent melting cheese when you want something especially creamy.
You can even combine two cheeses if you have small amounts left in the refrigerator.
Make It Your Own
One of the best things about a tuna melt is how easily you can change it.
Add chopped celery when you want a little crunch.
Add dill pickle for a brighter, tangier flavor.
Place a thin tomato slice underneath the cheese for a traditional diner-style tuna melt.
Add fresh dill or parsley when you want a fresher flavor.
You can also leave out any ingredient you do not enjoy. A simple mixture of tuna, mayonnaise, seasonings, and cheese still makes a delicious meal.
What to Serve With a Keto Tuna Melt
A tuna melt can easily become part of a complete keto lunch or dinner.
Serve it alongside a green salad, sliced cucumber, avocado, roasted broccoli, cauliflower soup, keto vegetable soup, or a few dill pickle slices.
For a lighter meal, enjoy one open-faced tuna melt with a large salad.
For a more substantial meal, enjoy two.
